Newsletter
February 2010

Carolina Outdoor Care Customer,

I want to express my gratitude for reading our newsletter.  We try to bring you relevant information combined with a personal touch and hopefully not bore you in the process.  I hope you enjoy what we have for you this month.

Plant of the Month:  Japanese Pittosporum.

This month we have added a Plant of the Month spotlight. I sill share a little information about the plant and give you a link to a more in depth fact sheet provided by North Carolina State University.

Pittosporum tobira , (Japanese Pittosporum) is a very tough small shrub that will grow in sun or shade.  Its maximum size is 8-12 ft tall by 4-8 ft wide with a slow growth rate.  The most relevant characteristic of this plant is its ability to withstand drought and salt.  This plant can be pruning heavily and has 2-3” clusters of fragrant white flowers in late spring.

Seasonal Note:

Pre-Emergent Fertilizers:

Now that the weather is shifting into spring we will be applying a pre-emergent fertilizer for our Recurring services customers.  This is a mid range nitrogen fertilizer with a chemical to help prevent and control crabgrass.  You should see our crews applying this product for you the last week of the month.  Please let us know if you do not have this service, we will be glad to offer it to you.

Snow and Ice:

As we are all well aware, we can never tell what the weather will do. We may have had more snow this year that we have in the past four combined.  As always, we are ready to pre-treat your driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots with a landscape friendly melting agent.  We also have plow trucks ready to push you out in the event of a heavy snow.  Call our office if you are in need to assitance and we will take good care of you.

HollyTone:

For many of our customers we will be applying an organic fertilizer to many of our evergreen shrubs; such as rhododendrons, azalea, magnolia, and several others. This product helps alter the pH of the soil to the more acidic range, which many evergreen shrubs prefer.  If you would like to know more about HollyTone go to www.espoma.com

Hard Scapes:

If you are feeling cramped up in your house, after a long, cold, and snowy winter, maybe what you really need is a place to enjoy outside.  Now is a great time to consider a patio, walking garden, or ourdoor room.  If you are interested in brainstorming some ideas, contact out office at info@carolinaoutdoorcare.com.

Spring Clean Up:

Now is a great time to get your spring clean up on the schedule.  All of the leaves are gone, and daffodils and not yet coming up.  We would live to come remove any debris left over from winter and install new pinestraw or mulch to liven up your landscape as spring is jsut around the corner.
